Fairytale AU Meme [Open]

Pick one of my characters and I'll toss a disney/fairytale au scenario at you! I've got some rough descriptions of their roles below. You can start, or you can just give their name in a top-level and I’ll write something up. These can be shippy or not, although given the descriptions I’ll probably tend towards that way unless you tell me you don’t want that

Alec: Damsel in distress, suicidal, who thinks this whole thing is stupid and this story can be ended if anyone at any point just solves the problem of the ‘princess’ for good

Annabel: Necromancer, who tries to find love by bringing hers back from the dead

Dominic: Knight, who’s pretty sure that he’s supposed to slay the ‘dragon’ but might end up falling in love with him/her instead

I-No: The evil witch, finds delight in other people’s suffering

Ivy: The persecuted heroine, who badly wants to believe in love but doesn’t really believe that it can trump the facts of life

Kai: Prince charming, careful and earnest, hugely romantic who thinks that life’s course can be changed by love

Ky: Either the hero, earnest but not very good at people, or the damsel in distress who’s going to apologize for having to be rescued

Rose: Ghost girl, who will accept a coat in exchange for being able to touch and feel for a while

Sol: The dragon, why are you waking him up from his nap just to rescue a princess? He doesn’t have time for this crap.

Valentine: The evil king whose goal in all of this is power and also just seeing the ordinary people scramble

Kai

It can be hard to stay in this form for long, but small dragons that could be mistaken for birds at first glance can usually get around more than his true form, as a giant, black dragon with glistening eyes that more than one knight has tried to slay. Ryoji knows quite well how to defend himself against such types, but... he knows they don't represent humans as a whole, so he's always been curious. Most of the times he's flown through the kingdom have been to look at things and try to figure out how they are, but. That hasn't gone very well.

So once he managed to get this form working for him, he flew eagerly into the kingdom, but, um. Apparently if you're smaller it takes longer to fly, so Ryoji perches himself on a high up window for a break. Between the flight and maintaining this form, he's a little tired.

Kai is wandering the palace. He’s not a prisoner here, he’s an honored inhabitant, but some days that doesn’t feel so different from being a prisoner. There’s a whole world outside of the palace, and he sees it on hunting trips or not at all. At least the fact that Kai’s father is starting to get irritated by Kai’s lack of success on the hunting trips means that there have been more of them, of late.

The palace, though, Kai does know, so it holds little enough interest for him. Instead he spends a lot of time gazing out the window, and when he sees the unusual shape — a bird, it has to be — he moves a little towards it, curious. “Hey there,” he says to it, in the manner of a man speaking to a plant, or his dogs, or anything that he doesn’t expect to hear speak back.

Oh, there's a person! And he's not screaming! This is already an improvement on any interactions Ryoji's had with people so far.

"Hello!" the creature chirps right back, and... belatedly, Ryoji realizes maybe he should have kept quiet. Talking animals, if the boy couldn't tell he was a dragon, were not uncommon but not exactly well received everywhere. Shoot. He'll have to cover... by making polite conversation. This is how you people, right? "What's your name? I'm Ryoji!"

Kai blinks at it, and he does take a careful step backwards but he’s more curious than he is wary. He just feels that he ought to be cautious of things that show up in his window and start talking to him.

“I’m Prince Kai,” he answers, and he’s a little surprised that the creature doesn’t already know that. then again, there is a lot that Kai doesn’t know about it. “What are you?”

He's a prince? Did Ryoji land in the palace? ...He probably landed in the palace. That would explain why this is so high up. Um. Oops.

"...What do you think I am?" he asks right back, trying to gauge the prince's reaction. This is totally a legit question, right? Because... magic?

“I don’t know.” Kai is going to blink at this creature and maybe lean in a little closer in order to be able to see it better.

“That’s why I asked you. I’m human.” Which is probably perfectly obvious, but hey, it helps to open negotiations with them on equal footing, right?

Ryoji really doesn't want to come out and say 'dragon,' since that has certain connotations with it. But if Kai figured it out and didn't hate him then... that would mean it was ok, right?

"Guess!" he chirps cheerfully, sitting very still on the window so Kai can look if he wants. ...hopefully it also serves to not scare him if he figures it out.]

Ky is going to note the wings, and the similarity perhaps to a lizard, and then he’s going to put on his most thoughtful face.

“Can you breathe fire?” He’s not going to just come out and say it, that feels too ridiculous.

Ryoji nods. "Yes!" he says, and he thinks about demonstrating but... fire up here is probably bad. And he doesn't know if his fire got smaller with the rest of him. Probably best to hold off on that for now.

“Wow.” Kai half-grins, half-laughs, because he hadn’t really expected the answer to be yes. “You’re really a dragon?” Then he shrugs, as if confiding a secret. “I’ve never met a dragon before. Are you here to kidnap me away?” It’s…pretty tiny though.

Oh this great! Actually talking! Ryoji rustles his wings out, wanting to move again after trying to sit so stiffly. "Yeah! The dragon part. Not the kidnapping part." ...He's not very good at this. It would be pretty hard to kidnap someone like this, honestly.

Kai isn’t sure whether he should he interpret the wing-rustling as a sign of discomfort with his current position or an urge of Ryoji’s to be on his way. “Why don’t you come inside? And are you sure about the kidnapping?” Kai sounds…almost disappointed, yes.

"Ok!" Inside is... interesting. Ryoji will hop down from the window, landing on the floor next to it- he isn't sure if he's supposed to touch things in this room or what.

The tone doesn't get missed, and the dragon is very puzzled. "Do you want to be kidnapped?" he asks.

“It would be an adventure, wouldn’t it?” Sure, Kai is aware that maybe many people don’t want to be kidnapped, but it does happen all the same in all the stories the bards tell. Why not be prepared?

“And then I could be rescued, and fall in love.” No, he’s not spent lots of time thinking about this, why do you ask?

"Is that how it works?" Ryoji is not terribly familiar with that particular idea, especially since he's had more experience on the other side of things. "...You know the dragon usually gets killed in those stories, right?" He doesn't want to kidnap him if he gets killed in the end. That seems like a bad thing.

“And it’s usually a princess.” As if that proves Kai’s point somehow. “You could just let me go when someone show up to rescue me. And you wouldn’t have to keep me in a cave all the time. We could go on some adventures and see more of the world.” Because trading the castle for a cave doesn’t seem like as much fun.

"Oh..." Huh. That's sort of an idea. Though, Ryoji knows knights can be dumb and wouldn't listen and he'd probably at least have to fight them a little. He doesn't want to burst Kai's bubble, though. "That does sound kind of fun!"

Kai grins, lighting up. “So, would you do it, then?” It would be really great to have an adventure, and not have to focus on his lessons or making public appearances for a while.

Ryoji tilts his head, thinking for a moment (which is a comical look on an already hilariously small dragon). "I guess so..." he says, hesitantly, "When?"

"What about right now?" If it's a kidnapping, then Kai doesn't have to say goodbye, although maybe he should pack things. Speaking of which... "Are we going to have to steal a horse? I don't think you could carry me."

Wow, apparently kidnapping people takes a lot of thought. Who knew! "Not like this, no. I'm usually bigger but I probably shouldn't do that. Maybe at night I could."

"Tonight?" Kai is really excited about this, sorry not sorry. But then he frowns. "I can't promise no one would see you." If that were the case he could just run away, even if that wouldn't be as exciting as being kidnapped.

"I know." He's a dragon- it would be really hard for no one to see him. "Which one do you want to do?" It's your kidnap fantasy, after all.

But it can be everyone's kidnap reality! "Tonight would be fine. I just have to write a note for my dad, so he doesn't worry." Because that's how kidnapping works, right?

"Ok." Ryoji... has no idea how kidnapping works, and Kai's thought about this a lot so he probably knows more. And people not worrying sounds like a good thing! (And really Kai doesn't know where Ryoji's cave is so it's not like he'll be able to leave directions.)
