Fairytale AU Meme [Open]

Pick one of my characters and I'll toss a disney/fairytale au scenario at you! I've got some rough descriptions of their roles below. You can start, or you can just give their name in a top-level and I’ll write something up. These can be shippy or not, although given the descriptions I’ll probably tend towards that way unless you tell me you don’t want that

Alec: Damsel in distress, suicidal, who thinks this whole thing is stupid and this story can be ended if anyone at any point just solves the problem of the ‘princess’ for good

Annabel: Necromancer, who tries to find love by bringing hers back from the dead

Dominic: Knight, who’s pretty sure that he’s supposed to slay the ‘dragon’ but might end up falling in love with him/her instead

I-No: The evil witch, finds delight in other people’s suffering

Ivy: The persecuted heroine, who badly wants to believe in love but doesn’t really believe that it can trump the facts of life

Kai: Prince charming, careful and earnest, hugely romantic who thinks that life’s course can be changed by love

Ky: Either the hero, earnest but not very good at people, or the damsel in distress who’s going to apologize for having to be rescued

Rose: Ghost girl, who will accept a coat in exchange for being able to touch and feel for a while

Sol: The dragon, why are you waking him up from his nap just to rescue a princess? He doesn’t have time for this crap.

Valentine: The evil king whose goal in all of this is power and also just seeing the ordinary people scramble

Ryoji stills again in the flower patch, wanting to listen to the first part of what Kai said more than the second, but afraid of what might happen. He... can't go through their last interaction again.

Once again, this is a question he doesn't know how to answer. He's been trying, sort of. But he can't be well the way he is and he's certainly gotten more reckless. "I'm alive." That's... what Kai wanted to know, right?

Kai’s laugh is automatic and bitter, but his eyes dart away from Ryoji, as if doing so will keep him from hurting, will make this all okay after all. This isn’t granting him the peace of a moment alone he’d hoped for, but he thinks he’s breaking free of his state of mind enough to hurt.

“So am I.”

Nothing moves in the batch of flowers for a long moment, Ryoji curled around on himself as he listens. He doesn't like the sound of Kai's laugh, because this laugh isn't like the real one. Kai's hurting too, and he doesn't get it. Why would Kai have pushed him away if it would hurt the both of them?

There's a shifting noise again and Ryoji's poking back out, completely leaving the safety of the plants to look up at Kai. He's not flying up to his face, nor into his arms, just... sitting there on the ground in front of him. Dragons don't have facial expressions in the way humans do, but they do have body language. And even now, this little dragon is pulled in on itself, sad and almost afraid.

Kai studies Ryoji for a moment, like he's trying to figure something about, but in the end he still doesn't really have a choice. He crouches down, so that he can talk to Ryoji.

"Just be careful, okay? It'll help, if I know that you're free and you're safe."

When Kai bends down, Ryoji cautiously takes a few little steps towards him. He still wants to be with him, more than anything else. And just like before, he doesn't like how resigned Kai is to something that clearly is going to make him miserable. "...You don't have to do it," he says softly.

Kai shakes his head. He's been down this path before. "What do I do instead? There could be no other negotiation."

Not when there could be even more on offer.

Ryoji's quiet- Kai already told him fire is not a solution, and he really doesn't know anything about politics. "...I could kidnap you again?" he offers, a weak attempt at humor in his voice but still mostly sad.

Kai laughs, and it brightens his face, lights him up in a way he hasn't had in months. Then he grows serious.

"That may work... It should at least buy us more time. But Ryoji, there's a risk she'll send men to try to kill you."

Oh. Ryoji hadn't actually expected that kind of an answer.

"I don't care," he says, straightening up a little, "I'll do it, if you want me too."

"I care if you die." Kai makes a face at Ryoji.

"You need to take care of yourself first, if it comes to that. Or I won't agree to this."

Ryoji considers this, and then flies up to land on Kai's shoulder, nuzzling him gently. "Ok," he says quietly, "I'll take care of both of us." Kai still gets priority, but.

Kai nods, decisive at last. "Then let's do this." He tries to quiet his conscience with the knowledge that Levana won't easily tolerate a dragon anyway.

Ryoji nods, and maybe there's a little dragon kiss, very happy that Kai doesn't hate him and wants to be rid of this terrible, terrible queen. "Ok," he says, and he gets off Kai's shoulder to transform into his full form, waiting for Kai to get on.

Kai has made his decision, and he refuses to question it further. Instead he makes himself comfortable on Ryoji's back, not taking anything. He's being kidnapped, after all.

Once Kai is secure, Ryoji takes off, and it is not terribly subtle. Which... is not great, really, but there's nothing they can really do about that. He soars through the air, quick as he can, landing only once they're in the security of his cave. He waits until Kai gets off, happily nuzzling against his face again.

Kai climbs off, and assesses the cave. It's been a while since he's been here, but it doesn't quite quiet his worries. He needs to come up with a plan, actions for what he's going to do next.

It's mostly the same as it was, just... there are some scorch marks in places there didn't used to be but it's totally fine, don't worry about it. "Are you ok?" Ryoji asks, curling around him.

"I'm getting there," Kai answers, because there's not really another option, and because with Ryoji curled around him he's losing the impulse to pace. Instead he settles down against the dragon.

Ryoji smiles a toothy dragon grin, settling around Kai and happier than he's been in a while. This is where Kai is supposed to be, in his mind, and it brings a sense of peace he's been missing to have him back. He wonders if he still has any of the clothes Kai got him... he still has the gold shirt, and there's probably a pair of pants he didn't burn...

Kai feels obligated to his people, of course he does, but for an evening he's willing to try to accept that there's nothing else he can do.

After a while of just being curled around him, Ryoji will carefully get up and pad off to his hoard. It takes a few minutes, but he comes back and is human- and he did find a pair of pants, luckily (and the blindingly gold shirt). He comes and sits next to Kai, leaning into him.

Kai can't help the smile at seeing Ryoji in that shirt, all glittering and bright. It reminds him of better, happier times.

"I missed you," Kai admits, quietly.

Something in Ryoji's heart flutters to hear him say that. "I missed you too," he says, nuzzling into the boy. He's... a little afraid to kiss him again, given what it got him last time.

Kai's smile softens, and then he leans back against Ryoji. "We should sleep, and focus on a more long-term solution."

Ryoji nods, his arms wrapped around Kai and not particularly keen on moving anytime soon. Sleep sounds like a good solution to that. "Alright," he agrees, "We'll figure out something tomorrow, ok?"
