Fairytale AU Meme [Open]

Pick one of my characters and I'll toss a disney/fairytale au scenario at you! I've got some rough descriptions of their roles below. You can start, or you can just give their name in a top-level and I’ll write something up. These can be shippy or not, although given the descriptions I’ll probably tend towards that way unless you tell me you don’t want that

Alec: Damsel in distress, suicidal, who thinks this whole thing is stupid and this story can be ended if anyone at any point just solves the problem of the ‘princess’ for good

Annabel: Necromancer, who tries to find love by bringing hers back from the dead

Dominic: Knight, who’s pretty sure that he’s supposed to slay the ‘dragon’ but might end up falling in love with him/her instead

I-No: The evil witch, finds delight in other people’s suffering

Ivy: The persecuted heroine, who badly wants to believe in love but doesn’t really believe that it can trump the facts of life

Kai: Prince charming, careful and earnest, hugely romantic who thinks that life’s course can be changed by love

Ky: Either the hero, earnest but not very good at people, or the damsel in distress who’s going to apologize for having to be rescued

Rose: Ghost girl, who will accept a coat in exchange for being able to touch and feel for a while

Sol: The dragon, why are you waking him up from his nap just to rescue a princess? He doesn’t have time for this crap.

Valentine: The evil king whose goal in all of this is power and also just seeing the ordinary people scramble

Noooo stop why are you doing that. Well, if you're going to move him Ryoji will just be a people, then, reaching out to take Kai's hand. "No it's not," he says quietly, "Not to me."

He needs to focus, and that means making plans to protect his people.

"Then I'm fine." He's not lying at all, nope nope.

Well Ryoji's probably making that hard, because he's not letting go of Kai's hand. In fact, he's reaching over so both of his hands are holding onto Kai's. "No, you're not," he says softly, and even though he doesn't understand the reason he has a feeling Kai won't admit that. "...What about me?"

"I don't know." This conversation is harder than it has any right to be, and Kai doesn't think its fair that he needs to answer. "You're probably fine too." Or he can be.

Ryoji shakes his head. "She'd try to make me leave, wouldn't she?" Emphasis on the word try. "I don't want to leave you."

"I should make you leave. It's for your protection."

Kai takes a step to the side. "And for my own."

"But--" No no no this is not allowed. He has the saddest dragon eyes, and he steps to the side with Kai to continue looking at him. "Why would that be for yours?"

Kai is sure that he shouldn't answer with the truth, because then Ryoji will keep focusing on a way to rescue him. And that will result in Ryoji getting hurt. "A prince's job is to protect his people, and to marry well." At least this will do one of those.

Unfortunately for Kai, Ryoji is very not keen on leaving Kai to this fate- even if he believed Kai was alright with it, which he doesn't, Ryoji isn't. He feels like something very precious is being stolen from him. And dragons don't do well with precious things being stolen.

"That's not really an answer..." he murmurs, and reaches up with one of his hands to touch Kai's cheek. He doesn't know what else to say, if Kai won't talk to them, than-- "Please don't do this."

Kai blushes at the touch, certain he shouldn't feel the pounding of his heart at his country's hour of need and certain he can't avoid it.

"I don't really have a choice," he says, and then, because that might be too much, he rushes forward, "I won't forget you. I promise."

Ryoji's really not selfish, as least as far as dragons go. He thinks he's been very good about giving Kai his space and learning when he should stay away because Kai was busy and when he needed to visit because Kai was stressed. But this time there is the definite implication that if he leaves, he won't be able to come back, and that's something he just can't deal with.

"I don't think that's good enough, for me," he says softly. He knows it isn't. And...proving his point, in a way, he leans in and kisses Kai.

Kai stays still, frozen in surprise for a moment, before the cold certainty comes back over him, shoving back the warmth of Ryoji’s body and what he’s offering. This has come up before, Ryoji doesn’t think like Kai does, can’t think like a human does because even when he can appear as one, he’s not a human.

He takes a step back, red to his ears, trying to find what to say.

Ryoji stumbles a little as Kai pushes him back. Somehow... that wasn't what he expected. He thought-- he hoped--

The result of this is Kai now has a very sad dragon looking up at him with wide blue eyes. "Kai...?"

"Maybe you should go," Kai says, his voice feels small, he feels small, but he can still feel his heart pounding.

But what he wants isn't what's right for his people or for Ryoji.

There's dead silence between them for a moment, and Ryoji finds that suddenly everything hurts and there's water forming in the corner of his eyes. He doesn't understand. This isn't supposed to go this way. Kai is his. He has to be.

Almost without thinking, he turns back into the small dragon, the clothes he was wearing dropping to the floor as he darts out the window. As soon as he's clear of it, he transforms into his larger form, flying away as fast as he can.

Kai watches him for a very long moment, much longer than he should when duty and rationale tug at his heart, but then it's long after Ryoji's form has faded, when Kai is staring into an empty sky, and he needs to prepare for Queen Levana, needs to be able to focus on the coming crisis.

Even if he can't -- will probably never be able to -- get thoughts of Ryoji out of his head.

Ryoji doesn't stop flying until he reaches his cave, immediately burrowing himself in a pile of gold for comfort, as dragons are wont to do. The week that follows is a largely miserable one for him, alternating between desperately trying seek comfort from ~~what remains of~~ his hoard and setting fire to anything that hurts too much to look at.

But he still needs to eat, and while Ryoji's always been very careful about where he gets his food, he doesn't have the energy for that. So he'll fly out when he's hungry, not particularly mindful of if he's taking animals from people or not, or how much it worries people when he flies over.

...He might be doing most of this in a certain neighboring country, too, a lash out at a queen who certainly doesn't have the best interests of others at heart.

At least Levana can’t even think to link dragon attacks to Kai, which means that she doesn’t blame him for them. On the other hand, that means time marches them onwards to their wedding, to the vows.

He’s dressed formally, in the attire that fits an Emperor, and he knows that he should be in his chambers, preparing himself and letting someone fix the hair that he’s officially ruffled with his hand running through it.

Instead he sneaks out to go for a walk, to see the land that is still, for now, his.

Ryoji tried to stay away from the castle, he really did. It still makes him unreasonably sad, thinking about Kai or pretty much anything to do with him. But after he's grumpily eaten something stolen from Luna, he flew back that way, changing back into a smaller dragon once he got closer.

He's curled up in a garden Kai showed him once, not on the castle grounds but near to it, half hidden under some golden flowers that he liked. He's been ignoring any footsteps, mostly people seeming to assume his long tail was from a snake and giving him a wide berth.

Kai, on the other hand, isn’t paying much attention at all to his surroundings, lost in his thoughts and, it’s fair to say, his own despair. He’s hung on every word of a dragon attack, thinking that at least Ryoji is probably okay, in a way he wouldn’t have been otherwise.

There’s no one else in the garden right now that he can see, and so Kai allows himself of the luxury of a long sigh out.

The sigh catches Ryoji's attention, and by Kai's feet there's a rustling in the nest of flowers before a small dragon head pops out, looking to see who had made that noise. What Ryoji sees is clearly not what he was expecting, however, and the little dragon stills, almost frozen in place. ...Maybe if he doesn't move, Kai won't notice him. (But he still kind of wants Kai to--)

Kai is half-sunk in despair, but he knows he can't let anyone see him that way, which is why his head snaps around at the movement, expecting to see a...rabbit, maybe.

"R-ryoji? Oh, are you okay?" Maybe he's injured. Why else would he be here?

...Weirdly, Ryoji finds he doesn't actually know how to answer that question. "...I'm not hurt," he says, but he also attempts to withdraw back into the flowers, "S-sorry, I'll..." Hide. He'll hide.

"Wait," Kai says, though he shouldn't, and he follows it up quickly with "Never mind." He wants to ask Ryoji why he's here, wants to have a friend, but this is all there is, isn't it?

"Just...are you taking care?"

Ryoji stills again in the flower patch, wanting to listen to the first part of what Kai said more than the second, but afraid of what might happen. He... can't go through their last interaction again.

Once again, this is a question he doesn't know how to answer. He's been trying, sort of. But he can't be well the way he is and he's certainly gotten more reckless. "I'm alive." That's... what Kai wanted to know, right?
