Fairytale AU Meme [Open]

Pick one of my characters and I'll toss a disney/fairytale au scenario at you! I've got some rough descriptions of their roles below. You can start, or you can just give their name in a top-level and I’ll write something up. These can be shippy or not, although given the descriptions I’ll probably tend towards that way unless you tell me you don’t want that

Alec: Damsel in distress, suicidal, who thinks this whole thing is stupid and this story can be ended if anyone at any point just solves the problem of the ‘princess’ for good

Annabel: Necromancer, who tries to find love by bringing hers back from the dead

Dominic: Knight, who’s pretty sure that he’s supposed to slay the ‘dragon’ but might end up falling in love with him/her instead

I-No: The evil witch, finds delight in other people’s suffering

Ivy: The persecuted heroine, who badly wants to believe in love but doesn’t really believe that it can trump the facts of life

Kai: Prince charming, careful and earnest, hugely romantic who thinks that life’s course can be changed by love

Ky: Either the hero, earnest but not very good at people, or the damsel in distress who’s going to apologize for having to be rescued

Rose: Ghost girl, who will accept a coat in exchange for being able to touch and feel for a while

Sol: The dragon, why are you waking him up from his nap just to rescue a princess? He doesn’t have time for this crap.

Valentine: The evil king whose goal in all of this is power and also just seeing the ordinary people scramble

Oh...! This is nice. Ryoji grins, trying to mimic the motion with some success. "You're my best friend too!"

After Ryoji goes home, Rikan speaks with Kai, trying to explain to him why his reaction had been what it was and what sort of obligations Kai, as prince, has to his people. They're many, but it helps Kai to make sense of the reaction, to understand what his life is going to look like, as he grows up. He's starting to learn that the impression he leaves with his actions is as important as the reason he takes them.

Kai starts to understand more of the burden of leadership, but he's still not ready when his father dies, when suddenly he has a coronation to worry about, and more. It's long days filled with trying to figure out his own kingdom, wishing for the space to mourn his father.

Ryoji misses Kai pretty much immediately after he goes back to his cave. It seems very lonely there, now, and dragon hoarding instincts kind of had him viewing Kai as 'his' so him not being there is very sad indeed. But he, too, learns a bit from the experience, and grows up a little more.

His attempts to learn more about how humans interact has been hard, seeing as he can't stay with Kai constantly (or much at all), but mourning is a concept familiar to both of their species. So at some point during a break in Kai's preparations, there is a little dragon perched on his window, waiting for him.

Kai blinks for a long moment, not certain if he's hallucinating, but when he realizes that he's not a slow but bright smile overtakes his face. "Ryoji! Come in."

Kai's face goes serious after a moment. "What's the cause of your visit?" Does he need protection?

Ryoji flaps in, transforming neatly into a boy as his feet touch the ground. ...He's not quite sure if he likes such a serious expression on the other boy's face, but given the circumstances...

"I heard about your father," he says quietly, and using the one piece of human communication he did pick up properly, moves forward to hug Kai. ...With a little face nuzzle, since he never really figured out he shouldn't do that.

"Ahh..." Kai considers for a moment that Ryoji came just for that, but he can't muster more than a small smile in response to that thought.

"I'll sort things more, but I assure you that the promise I made not to encroach on your holdings stands." Kai takes a deep breath. "Are you still willing to offer your assistance if necessary?"

Ryoji moves back, not quite sure if he's asking because it's likely to be needed or not, or if he thought that would have been a thing Ryoji was worried about. (He wasn't.) It doesn't change his answer either way. "Of course I am," he says, hands still on Kai's sides as he gives him a small smile, "However you need it."

Kai lets out a slow breath. "That's good to hear. I may not... There are just some situations developing now." He wants time and space to mourn his father, or at least catch his breath. He may not have that.

Oh. That sounds like a concerning thing. Ryoji reaches up to put his hands on Kai's face in concern. (He's been trying to learn human things! He just doesn't know what situations all of them do in.) "What's going on? Can I help?" Do you need anything set on fire? He can do that!

Kai ducks his head away, his ears turning a little red. "I'm sure you can help, but I don't want you to be in any danger. Perhaps you should simply stay away for a while."

Ryoji lets his hands drop when Kai looks away, but it doesn't make him fret any less. "But I want to help. I can take care of myself." And he doesn't want to leave you so soon.

"I don't know how this is going to go," Kai admits. Then he sighs. "I think the kingdom of Luna is massing an attack but I need someone to verify that they're gathering their army. Can you gather such intelligence safely?"

A normal messenger would take much longer.

That actually would be very easy- a lot of people have mistaken Ryoji for a bird in his smaller form, as long as he doesn't stay still for too long. "Yes. I could do that." And he'll nudge Kai's face with his, pleased that he'll be able to do something for his friend.

It's pretty close to a kiss, right? Except that that's clearly not what Ryoji is aiming for, and Kai's being absurd to even let his thoughts go that direction. "They're located to the North of us. Just...be careful, okay?"

Ryoji might not mean it as a kiss, but he is trying to get across his affection for Kai. How far that affection goes... he's not even sure he knows, yet. "I will. Should I just come back here when I find something?"

"Please." Kai gives Ryoji a smile that's very bright for a moment, before he turns back to his other thoughts, distracted again. "I'll leave the guards instructions not to stop you." Not that they would really be able to do more than try.

Nooo, Ryoji likes that bright smile! Maybe nuzzling Kai again will bring it back. "Alright. I'll come back soon!"

"Thank you." Kai half-bows, and then he's off to try to find his advisors, to figure out what to do once they know the answer.

That bow thing is weird. Ryoji's not sure at all what that's about. But he will turn into a tiny dragon and fly over to Luna, keeping himself mostly concealed in trees and things when he's not flying. He is the most sneaky dragon. But yeah, it looks like Luna is probably raising an army. And it's... well to Ryoji it looks like a lot of humans but he's used to villages and things. Should he try counting??]

It will surely help Kai to know a rough order of magnitude, but for now he's trying to figure out what sort of call he can put out, and what sort of defense he can muster if he needs to.

He keeps coming around to 'not enough' and 'a lot of people on both sides will die'.

Once Ryoji has better information than 'a lot,' he'll head back to Kai and perch on the window like he always does. Unless it takes Kai a while to show up and then Ryoji might let himself in and curl up for a nap on Kai's bed.

Kai does eventually return, because he's been caught up in planning, and he didn't think Ryoji would be back so soon. He'd forgotten that Ryoji wouldn't feel comfortable seeking him out.

He reaches out to gently shake Ryoji awake. "How long have you been waiting?"

Kai is his friend. The rest of the people in the castle have never really figured out what to do with him. So... yes, opting to wait for Kai.

The little dragon stirs, nudging Kai's hands and then deciding that sitting in Kai's lap is a good idea. "Dunno. Probably not long?" He peers up at Kai, blue eyes evident against black scales. "How are you?"

Kai blinks, a little concerned for a moment as he reassures himself that Ryoji is okay, and then he feels a little annoyed.

"Fine." His voice is brusque, weighed down with the things he can't help but have on his shoulders. "What did you find out?"

Ryoji isn't sure what that tone of voice means, and it concerns him enough to slip into a human form to talk to Kai- maybe that will help? (Look, he even mostly remembers to get out of Kai's lap before doing that!) "They are building an army," he says quietly, "And they look like they've pulled together a lot." He tells Kai the rough estimate he gathered, of numbers and what they seem to have available to them.
