Fairytale AU Meme [Open]

Pick one of my characters and I'll toss a disney/fairytale au scenario at you! I've got some rough descriptions of their roles below. You can start, or you can just give their name in a top-level and I’ll write something up. These can be shippy or not, although given the descriptions I’ll probably tend towards that way unless you tell me you don’t want that

Alec: Damsel in distress, suicidal, who thinks this whole thing is stupid and this story can be ended if anyone at any point just solves the problem of the ‘princess’ for good

Annabel: Necromancer, who tries to find love by bringing hers back from the dead

Dominic: Knight, who’s pretty sure that he’s supposed to slay the ‘dragon’ but might end up falling in love with him/her instead

I-No: The evil witch, finds delight in other people’s suffering

Ivy: The persecuted heroine, who badly wants to believe in love but doesn’t really believe that it can trump the facts of life

Kai: Prince charming, careful and earnest, hugely romantic who thinks that life’s course can be changed by love

Ky: Either the hero, earnest but not very good at people, or the damsel in distress who’s going to apologize for having to be rescued

Rose: Ghost girl, who will accept a coat in exchange for being able to touch and feel for a while

Sol: The dragon, why are you waking him up from his nap just to rescue a princess? He doesn’t have time for this crap.

Valentine: The evil king whose goal in all of this is power and also just seeing the ordinary people scramble

Kai cocks his head, not quite certain what Ryoji is doing, but then he relaxes at the question. "Yes. Do you get lonely, where you are?"

Ryoji nods. "There aren't a lot of dragons around... and most people don't want to talk to me." It's very upsetting.

"Why not?" That seems very suspicious, and Ryoji isn't mean or anything.

[dangerouslyinlove]

"Because I'm a dragon." Most people don't need more of a reason than that.

"But not, like, a mean one." That's important to distinguish!

[dangerouslyinlove]

"Well, no. But most people don't want to ask first." Seeing as mean dragons kind of eat people.

[tothealtar]

"Isn't there a way for you to show them that? I wasn't scared the first time we met."

[dangerouslyinlove]

Ryoji thinks about this. "I was in the smaller form when I first met you... that was the first time I ever used it. Maybe that would help with other people?"

"I think so." Kai smiles brightly. Ryoji is nice, he deserves to have more friends.

[dangerouslyinlove]

"Then... maybe I'll be able to try sometime!" Ryoji grins back. "Though, I guess I'm supposed to stay here for now, right?" And he doesn't much want to leave Kai.

"Do you need to go somewhere where you can relax back to your normal state?"

[dangerouslyinlove]

Ryoji nods. "Eventually, yeah." He can wait a little bit, if need be.

"How soon is eventually?" Kai wants to make sure he's prepared.

[dangerouslyinlove]

Ryoji pauses, thinking. "Well... I should be able to last until the end of the day no problem, but I've never slept in this form before. Do I need to? It might be a good idea for me to take a break from it before then..."

"We'll just have to find a big room that my dad won't get mad at me for taking over. Everyone knows you're a dragon already. And I'll stay with, to keep you safe." Because that makes sense, Kai.

It makes Ryoji happy, even if protecting him is actually a rather silly idea. He nudges his head against Kai's again since dragon affection is something he doesn't have to think about, and he's still learning about human ones. "Thanks."

Kai laughs, and lifts a hand to pat Ryoji on the head. That makes it less awkward, right? "We're still going to be friends."

Totally! It's not awkward at all! Never was. "Oh, good! I'm glad." He likes being friends.

Kai drops his arm to wrap around Ryoji's shoulder. "You're my best friend. You're definitely the neatest."

Oh...! This is nice. Ryoji grins, trying to mimic the motion with some success. "You're my best friend too!"

After Ryoji goes home, Rikan speaks with Kai, trying to explain to him why his reaction had been what it was and what sort of obligations Kai, as prince, has to his people. They're many, but it helps Kai to make sense of the reaction, to understand what his life is going to look like, as he grows up. He's starting to learn that the impression he leaves with his actions is as important as the reason he takes them.

Kai starts to understand more of the burden of leadership, but he's still not ready when his father dies, when suddenly he has a coronation to worry about, and more. It's long days filled with trying to figure out his own kingdom, wishing for the space to mourn his father.

Ryoji misses Kai pretty much immediately after he goes back to his cave. It seems very lonely there, now, and dragon hoarding instincts kind of had him viewing Kai as 'his' so him not being there is very sad indeed. But he, too, learns a bit from the experience, and grows up a little more.

His attempts to learn more about how humans interact has been hard, seeing as he can't stay with Kai constantly (or much at all), but mourning is a concept familiar to both of their species. So at some point during a break in Kai's preparations, there is a little dragon perched on his window, waiting for him.

Kai blinks for a long moment, not certain if he's hallucinating, but when he realizes that he's not a slow but bright smile overtakes his face. "Ryoji! Come in."

Kai's face goes serious after a moment. "What's the cause of your visit?" Does he need protection?

Ryoji flaps in, transforming neatly into a boy as his feet touch the ground. ...He's not quite sure if he likes such a serious expression on the other boy's face, but given the circumstances...

"I heard about your father," he says quietly, and using the one piece of human communication he did pick up properly, moves forward to hug Kai. ...With a little face nuzzle, since he never really figured out he shouldn't do that.

"Ahh..." Kai considers for a moment that Ryoji came just for that, but he can't muster more than a small smile in response to that thought.

"I'll sort things more, but I assure you that the promise I made not to encroach on your holdings stands." Kai takes a deep breath. "Are you still willing to offer your assistance if necessary?"
