Fairytale AU Meme [Open]

Pick one of my characters and I'll toss a disney/fairytale au scenario at you! I've got some rough descriptions of their roles below. You can start, or you can just give their name in a top-level and I’ll write something up. These can be shippy or not, although given the descriptions I’ll probably tend towards that way unless you tell me you don’t want that

Alec: Damsel in distress, suicidal, who thinks this whole thing is stupid and this story can be ended if anyone at any point just solves the problem of the ‘princess’ for good

Annabel: Necromancer, who tries to find love by bringing hers back from the dead

Dominic: Knight, who’s pretty sure that he’s supposed to slay the ‘dragon’ but might end up falling in love with him/her instead

I-No: The evil witch, finds delight in other people’s suffering

Ivy: The persecuted heroine, who badly wants to believe in love but doesn’t really believe that it can trump the facts of life

Kai: Prince charming, careful and earnest, hugely romantic who thinks that life’s course can be changed by love

Ky: Either the hero, earnest but not very good at people, or the damsel in distress who’s going to apologize for having to be rescued

Rose: Ghost girl, who will accept a coat in exchange for being able to touch and feel for a while

Sol: The dragon, why are you waking him up from his nap just to rescue a princess? He doesn’t have time for this crap.

Valentine: The evil king whose goal in all of this is power and also just seeing the ordinary people scramble

Ryoji doesn't have enough time to burrow his face into Kai's shoulder before his hand is being grabbed. The guards are very confused about where the dragon.

Kai doesn't explain to them because he doesn't...think to, and he's focused on presenting his new friend to his father. So after a moment they get escorted on, and Kai lets go of Ryoji's hand as they enter the room.

Ryoji is very nervous with all these new people who clearly don't like him around, so he'll stick close to Kai, looking up at the king as they enter. ...That just makes him want to hide behind Kai a little, but he won't! He will be brave!!!

"I met a dragon!" Kai declares, before his father can say anything. "And I think he'd make a valuable ally for our kingdom." Funnily enough, Emperor Rikan doesn't look very impressed.

Ryoji does not like the way this conversation is going already. He'll just... try to not look like he's hiding behind Kai and also looking as non-threatening as possible. (The second part is easy.)

"Where have you been?" Rikan asks, and Kai knows this isn't going well. "We've all been very worried about you."

"Oh," Kai says, and then, "There wasn't any need to worry."

Ryoji pokes Kai a little to get his attention. "Didn't you leave a note?" he asks, quietly.

Kai nods, momentarily indignant.

"Not precisely a reassuring one," Rikan says, though it's followed by a sigh. "I'm glad you appear unharmed."

Oh... well, Ryoji has no idea what Kai wrote. But his dad being glad is a good sign, right? (He still might hold onto Kai's hand, though- this is kind of scary...)

Kai's note had made mention of a dragon, so...

"You do realize what being a Prince means?" Rikan says.

"Yes, of course."

"I'm not convinced. Why did you bring this creature here?"

"He's not a creature, he's my friend! Besides, maybe he can help us."

Yes, that might be cause for a little concern.

Ryoji winces at being called a 'creature,' but he sighs. He should probably be kind of used to that. "Um... yeah! I'm pretty sure I could be helpful." Somehow. What can dragons do that people can't...?

"We're trying to avoid a war, not start one."

Kai sighs, before he brightens. "What if we defeated the dragon threat? Then they'd be in our debt. Without a marriage."

Ryoji, who is not following this conversation well at all, is naturally not sure how he feels about this next proposal. In his experience, after all, there has only been one way to defeat a dragon and it's not by being nice to them. "Kai...?" he says quietly, blue eyes wide and hurt.

Kai turns to Ryoji, confused for a moment. "You wouldn't actually have to hurt anyone, maybe just burn a field or two. And then we could fight a pretend battle and you retreat to lick your wounds."

Ryoji is very clearly not sure at all about this. How do pretend battles work? He's pretty sure people would still get hurt. "But..."

"Generally princesses marry their rescuer," Kai's father interjects.

Kai's brow furrows. This is not supposed to be a mess.

Ryoji considers this. "...Did I rescue you by bringing you back?" he asks, curiously. (Nevermind that Kai isn't a princess.)

"I don't know, would you have kept me against my will?"

Rikan has decided to ignore them both and consult with an adviser.

Honestly Rikan probably has the right idea.

"Well, no..." Kai is slotted into Ryoji's head as 'his' now, though (hoarding instincts and all), so he's not entirely sure how he'll cope if they have to separated.

They're still being ignored while the adults figure out what they're going to do."

"Then I didn't really need to be rescued at all." That's a good thing, mostly.

Ryoji is mostly oblivious to how much trouble he could easily be in thanks to this.

"I guess..." But just because he wouldn't have kept you there doesn't mean he doesn't want to.

"Maybe I need to be kidnapped by someone else so you can rescue me."

At this Rikan looks back at his son. "You're not getting kidnapped just now. Again. Or," he continues after a moment longer, "Married."

Kai considers that. It's good, right?

Ryoji brightens, since that sounds like a good idea, but then Kai's dad shoots it down. He's... not entirely sure either of those things are strictly good, but it's awfully hard to tell. "Then... what should we do?" The king clearly doesn't need them so they can just leave, right?

The King gives Ryoji a long look. "Don't leave the palace grounds. Either of you."

And then he leaves them be, because he needs to figure out the rest of this situation.

And Kai wraps his hand around Ryoji's wrist and focuses on getting out of there.

Well, that's probably ok. This place is pretty big, and Ryoji's used to mostly sticking around caves. He'll happily follow Kai out, still mostly oblivious to the seriousness of the situation. "Did that go alright?"
