College AU meme [open]

Pick one of my characters and I'll toss a college au scenario at you! I've got some rough descriptions below.

Alec: prickly as can be, likes to pick verbal fights with people stronger than him to show he's smarter, not really concerned with his own safety. Double major in mathematics and astronomy.
Annabel: cheery but socially awkward, prone to babbling. Kind of the mad scientist type. Major in biomedical engineering.
I-No: the bitchiest mean girl, she's loyal when she considers her loyalty earned but she's capricious and enjoys causing others pain. Major in business.
Ky: incredibly earnest, religious, repressed. Army ROTC participation and major in political science
Nyxnissa: practical and prone to arguing with people in a way to try to get them upset, although she doesn't really enjoy that, just can't help herself. Major in mechanical engineering.
Sol: grouchy, not very talkative, lazy but really smart. Major in physics.
Valentine: much more interested in drinking and partying than college classes, in fact pretends to be less smart than he is. Audacious and outrageous. Major in LGBT studies, as much to piss off his conservative father as anything else. Minor in business, because otherwise his father won't pay for college.

Venom takes the nod as confirmation and puts his book back on their shared bookcase. He goes for his coat and shoes, ready to get some fresh air.

And about three minutes later, he's ready to go. He hasn't even given Ky the chance to do what he needs to prepare for the trip. "Sorry. I guess I'm a little over-excited."

Ky doesn't have to do very much, although he dithers over whether or not he should bring a book for a moment before he decides that if Venom isn't, then he shouldn't.

Then he's grabbing his coat, throwing it over his shoulders but ready to put it on when he has to. "It's fine. We can go now."

"Good." Venom actually smiles a little. And before Ky knows it, Venom is heading out the door. He shouldn't be so excited, but he is. He's always treasured every moment he spends outside at night. If he could, he'd move into the town's observatory.

He waits out in the hall for his roommate, doing his best to calm himself.

Ky proceeds at his own quick but not ridiculously so speed, and then he's taking over and trying to lead the way. After all, he knows what bus they should take and when they should get off, and he's the one familiar with the area they're going to.

Not that the stars will be hard to find.

Venom stays close to Ky as he follows the blonde every step of the way, from boarding the bus to hopping off at the proper stop. During their trip, he notices the stars getting a little brighter as the light pollution fades away. A very slight smile graces his lips.

Once the bus pulls away, he turns to his roommate. "So where is this complex?"

"Just this way," Ky says, and it's dark but not trip-over-their-own-feet dark, not out on the street and they'll have the chance to let their eyes adjust.

But Ky's fingers find Venom's wrist all the same, maybe jut to make sure they stay together.

Venom feels Ky's hand, but he doesn't say anything. It's a good idea to stay close, after all. He doesn't want to lose track of his roommate since they're in an unfamiliar area. Besides, it feels kind of nice.

A light heat spreads through Venom's cheeks at that last thought.

It’s also easier to lead Venom this way, without having to constantly direct or glance back over his shoulder to make sure he’s being followed. Still, when Ky gets where he’s going, out away from the street and behind an apartment building, he does drop Venom’s hand, feeling awkward.

“I hope I didn’t overstate it,” he says, although the stars certainly seem bright enough to him here.

At first, Venom's a bit disappointed as he kind of enjoyed holding Ky's hand. But when he sees the stars, his jaw drops.

While there is a little interference, there's not enough to take away from the beauty that is the night sky. Venom takes a few steps forward, never once tearing his eyes away. He points to various large bodies, quietly naming them and their respective constellations under his breath. Then he remembers that he's not alone.

"S-sorry. It's just... it's beautiful."

Ky’s eyes are more on Venom than on the stars, and he remembers that that’s awkward, that it’s not very polite, at the same moment that Venom remembers Ky exists.

“Enjoy it,” Ky says, as if Venom needs his permission. The stars have quite some majesty to them, of course they do, and it’s good to be able to appreciate them through someone else’s eyes.

“It’s what we came out here for.”

Venom walks back to Ky, wanting to appreciate the stars next to him. "Thank you for bringing me out here. I haven't seen the night sky like this since I left England." As he makes out the Taurus constellation, his hand brushes against Ky's. Before he knows it, he's taken Ky's hand in his own.

Ky doesn't think he should feel the surge of warmth that he does at the contact of their fingers, but he tries to concentrate on the stars. "Which one's that one?" he asks, pointing with his free hand.

"Let me see..." Venom follows Ky's arm to the star in question. "Aldebaran. It's the brightest star in that particular constellation. But, if you look a bit to the northeast of it, you can see a cluster of stars." He points to them. "That's the Pleiades, or the Seven Sisters."

In depth Greek mythology hasn't been a very important part of Ky's education, although he has read a couple of books. It's all very poetic, and he can appreciate that. Still, he sees an opportunity here, and he's curious as well. "Do you know their story?" he asks.

Venom nods slightly. "If I recall correctly, they are the daughters of the Titan Atlas and Pleione the Nymph. And Orion pursues them through the sky." He then points out the three stars that make up the hunter's belt.

"Their names escape me, unfortunately."

"That's pretty cool," Ky says, although he doesn't know what else to say. "Why is Orion pursuing them?"

It's a cold night, and he edges a little closer to Venom, anchored by their hand together.

Venom sidles a little closer to Ky as well. A little huddling for body heat won't hurt. "I don't know the full reason, but I know he was in love with the youngest sister. But there are so many different tales..."

"There's a lot of romantic drama in the Greek myths, isn't there?" Ky grins for a moment, then looks at the ground to cover it. There's not really any reason the thought should amuse him as much as it does.

Venom chuckles at that. Oh yes, Venom did indeed laugh. "It's the truth. Most of it revolves around how many mortal women and goddesses fell for Zeus. It's amusing, really." Of course he still enjoys reading about them.

His hand squeezes Ky's gently as he offers a genuine smile.

“Whoever was making up the stories was doing a lot of thinking they were hot stuff and projecting, I guess,” Ky says. He really should be paying more attention to what’s around them, but Venom’s presence blocks all of that out to the point that he doesn’t notice they’re not alone until someone shouts something derisive about homosexuality towards them. And then he’s startled, uncertain, and very quick to drop Venom’s hand and step away.

“Maybe we should get back.”

The remark quickly extinguishes what little joy Venom has from their moment. Annoyed, he nods to Ky.

"Please."

Ky is staying near enough to Venom to continue to talk to him, but he's definitely distancing himself from how close they'd been before.

"I'm sorry," he says after a moment of them walking in silence. "I didn't mean..."

Venom's disappointed that Ky's keeping his distance now. He... kind of likes his roommate in that way, and holding his hand felt really good. But then that jerk had to say something.

"Don't apologize. That person should have minded their own business." It's obvious how bitter Venom is over this, but he won't take it out on his new friend.

"It is weird, to be holding hands, though," Ky protests. It doesn't excuse what the person had said, but it also doesn't excuse their own actions.

Maybe Venom's upset because of that, but Ky can do nothing other than to try to control himself better in the future.

"Is it?" Venom crosses his arms. "It's just... being close to another man has always felt normal to me. Natural." His demeanor softens a little.

"But If I did make you feel uncomfortable, I'm sorry."
