Nyxnissa so Dasheem hadn't made the sacrifices she had just to quit now. She surveyed the disaster that was a mall coffee shop midmorning on Black Friday: crying children, abandoned coffee cups and napkins, adults who couldn't handle standing in line, and not enough space for any of them.

She'd be damned if she was going to put a smile on her face for these people, but she met the eyes of the next customer. There was an implied challenge in the eye contact, which felt about right.
